Phosphorous acid is a colorless crystal. It can be slowly oxidized to phosphoric acid in the air. When heated to 180 °C, it can be decomposed into phosphoric acid and phosphine (highly toxic). As a dibasic acid, it has slightly ber acidity than phosphoric acid. Phosphorous acid has b reducibility and can easily reduce Ag+ to metal silver. It can also reduce sulfuric acid to sulfur dioxide. It is corrosive and has b hygroscopicity.

Phosphorous acid is an intermediate in the preparation of other phosphorous compounds. It is a raw material to prepare phosphonates for water treatment such as iron and manganese control, scale inhibition and removal, corrosion control and chlorine stabilization. The alkali metal salts (phosphites) of phosphorous acid are being widely marketed either as an agricultural fungicide or as a superior source of plant phosphorous nutrition. Phosphorous acid is used in stabilizing mixtures for plastic materials. Phosphorous acid is used for inhibiting high-temperature of corrosion-prone metal surfaces and to produce lubricants and lubricant additives.

1. In industry and agriculture
The most important use of phosphorous acid is the production of phosphonates which are used in water treatment. Phosphorous acid is also used for preparing phosphite salts, such as potassium phosphite.
2. As a chemical reagent
Phosphorous acid is used in chemical reactions as a reducing agent that is somewhat less vigorous than the related hypophosphorous acid.
Phosphorous acid is also used as nylon whitener, plastic thermometer, synthetic fiber in plastic industry; as materials for producing weedicide, bactericide and water stabilizer in pesticide industry.
